Today began bright and early with a 5:00 a.m. wake up call. I was off to the gym for my scheduled 3 mile run. It’s surprising how much easier it is to wake up before the sun, when you are in bed snoozing by 9 p.m. the previous night! I hit the treadmill immediately, no stretching, no eliptical machine, just cranked up the tunes plus the treadmill speed and I was off. I was disappointed with my time — 34:03 — but after the run, felt I was ready to face the day and 100+ middle school boys. I am digging the early morning run. I never thought I would say this, but I think I have become a convert.
So with today being Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, I was thinking about the tradition of giving up something for 40 days. My students have been talking about what they plan to do. Some are fasting from soda, or ice cream, or even the computer! Since I began running, my sweet tooth/junk food binging has been almost non-existent. Well….Trader Joe’s Chocolate Covered Chocolate Chip Dunkers are almost impossible to give up! And ummmm….the computer AND the internet –impossible! How would I ever blog about my running? But I have been thinking about wine. No, not cold turkey — heavens no! How could I possibly give it up for 40 days? I mean, Jesus must have loved his wine. He actually turned water into it! But maybe…just enjoy wine on the weekends? (Thank God, St. Patrick’s Day is on a Sunday!) How many calories are actually in a glass of Pinot Noir? (122 calories in a 5 oz. glass) Pinot Grigio? (about the same as red) How many calories do you burn when you run a mile? (139 for me) I think you can see where I’m going with this post! Somehow this post just became a math problem! So, I’ve added a new counter to my blog to log miles run, calories burned, and glasses of wine earned. I think I’ll keep the glasses of wine consumed between myself and Jesus. Cheers!
